What cables should I have installed in my home?
This is an essential question that you should be asking yourself. When you hire someone in any profession, make sure they want to do the job correctly... the first time. Installing multiple cables requires more time and effort. Some people don't want to do extra work. Ask them what cables and how many they will install. Ask them to show you an existing system. If you leave the decision up to them, you will get the minimum.
Look at the back of your dvd player, tv, cablebox, surround receiver. Then ask yourself, "Do I plan to use a cablebox or dss box to tune in channels? What if i want to hang my tv on the wall? Where will these box(es) be located? What video signals do I need at each television site? Can I change/upgrade in the future? Your answers should include some of the following. composite video and/or High Definition (HD) video, stereo analog audio, digital audio, Infra-red (IR), and your speakers?"
Many experienced installers install 2 RG6 and 2 CAT5E cables and say it's "future-proof". But this is a poor design that leads to frustration when you try to use these cables. Typically these cables are installed in a small inwall enclosure, and cut off too short. This design requires converters/compressors to send HD video and/or audio over CAT5E. Converters are not cheap, are required at both ends of the cable. They also add complexity to your system, may introduce signal degradation and signal interference.
You really need to set a game plan. Here is a checklist that you can check your house for its capability. Cables are typically marked with the "RG6", "18/2", etc. as noted below.
- three RG6 for an HD video signal (typically called component video - red, green, blue connectors on dvd players, cablebox, dss, HD cablebox, XBOX360, etc.)
- one RG6 for composite video (yellow cable on dvd players, vcr. TVs typically require both HD and composite video signals to accommodate both newer and older audio/video sources)
- one shielded 18/2 (18 gauge, 2 conductor) cable for IR (control hidden sources via remote control)
- one 16/2 for each speaker (or 16/4 for a pair of bookshelf, inwall, or inceling speakers)
- two RG6 for stereo analog audio and compression fittings instead of soldering (if your listening to your tv speakers and not external speakers)
- one RG6 for digital audio (for surround receivers)
- one CAT5E for network devices (computer, printers, power over ethernet (POE) devices like some touchpanels or wireless access points)
- one CAT5E for phone/fax
- one 18/2 for each doorbell
- one 18/6 for each thermostat
- one CAT5E for each outdoor temperature/humidity sensor
- one or more CAT5E for future devices
- one fiber optic for computers, future devices
All of these cables are needed for products that exist today. New cables may be introduced to accommodate future products or added functionality. New refrigerators in 2008 are talking about adding a flush TV in the door, Touchpanel control, Internet capabilities, Barcode scanner to scan inventory and reordering via Peapod. Some microwaves and ovens are also pursuing the Barcode and Internet capabilities for auto programming capabilities. Remember you can install more cable later, but holes will be cut, patching, painting, and cleanup will cost about 5 times as much.
